\nIt\u2019s often said that your\u00a0furnace, heat pump or air conditioner is the heart\u00a0of your\u00a0comfort system. Following the analogy further, your\u00a0air ducts are its veins & arteries.<\/p>\n

And just like high blood pressure is bad for your heart,\u00a0high \u201cduct static pressure\u201d is bad for your heating and cooling system, your comfort \u2013 and your wallet.<\/p>\n

When you go to the doctor for a check-up, common practice is for the doctor or nurse to measure your blood pressure. Our service technicians now have the\u00a0instruments\u00a0and\u00a0training\u00a0to do the same for your ducts when we do the\u00a0seasonal tune-up, or a\u00a0home and duct performance assessment.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been doing this for a while now, and the results are often eye-opening. The heating and cooling equivalent to 80 over 120 is\u00a0\u201chalf an inch\u201d\u00a0of water column pressure for most systems. When we test the duct pressure, we now routinely find pressures significantly higher than this \u2013often over double!<\/p>\n

Why does this matter?<\/h3>\n

Higher Utility Bills:<\/strong>\u00a0High pressures in the ducts leads to lower airflow. Lower airflow means lower efficiency. Lower efficiency means higher monthly utility bills.<\/p>\n

Comfort:<\/strong>\u00a0Lower airflow leads to poor distribution of conditioned air throughout the home, contributing to hot and cold spots, or the system not keeping up on the hottest or coldest days.<\/p>\n

Noise:<\/strong>\u00a0High static pressure is often a clue as to why a system is excessively noisy \u2013 the same repairs to reduce static pressure usually decrease noise as well.<\/p>\n

Repairs:<\/strong>\u00a0Low airflow causes furnaces to overheat internally, and air conditioners and heat pumps to not function smoothly. Many common expensive repairs \u2013 or premature total failure – are directly attributable to low airflow.<\/p>\n

The good news is that\u00a0identifying high static pressure\u00a0allows us to prescribe the right medicine to\u00a0make your system and your home happier!\u00a0Each system is different \u2013 but most common airflow improvements are fairly simple and\u00a0economical.
