{"id":2455,"date":"2013-05-22T19:23:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T02:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barronheating.com\/asthma-triggers-and-information\/"},"modified":"2020-10-01T09:21:08","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T16:21:08","slug":"asthma-triggers-and-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.barronheating.com\/blog\/asthma-triggers-and-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Asthma Triggers and Information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Asthma is a serious lung disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>* During an asthma attack, the airways get narrow, making it difficult to breathe.<br \/>\n* Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing.<br \/>\n* Asthma can even cause death.<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7345\" src=\"https:\/\/barronheating.imarketbeta.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/asthma-inhaler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.barronheating.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/asthma-inhaler.jpg 738w, https:\/\/www.barronheating.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/asthma-inhaler-277x300.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/>If you have asthma or a child with asthma, you are not alone.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>* About 17 million Americans have asthma.<br \/>\n* Asthma is the leading cause of long-term illness in children.<\/p>\n<p>The air that children breathe can make a difference.<br \/>\n* Asthma may be triggered by allergens and irritants that are common in homes.<br \/>\n* Help your child breathe easier: consult a doctor and reduce asthma triggers in your home.<\/p>\n<h3>Clear Your Home Of Asthma Trigger<\/h3>\n<p>Below are five common asthma triggers found in homes and what you can do to reduce you and your child&#8217;s exposure to them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not all of the asthma triggers listed here affect every person with asthma.<\/li>\n<li>Not all asthma triggers are listed here.<\/li>\n<li>See your doctor or health care provider for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Secondhand Smoke<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Asthma can be triggered by the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar and the smoke breathed out by a smoker.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose not to smoke in your home or car and do not allow others to do so either.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Dust Mites<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Dust mites are too small to be seen but are found in every home.<\/p>\n<p>Dust mites live in mattresses, pillows, carpets, fabric-covered furniture, bedcovers, clothes, and stuffed toys.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash sheets and blankets once a week in hot water.<\/li>\n<li>Choose washable stuffed toys, wash them often in hot water, and dry thoroughly. Keep stuffed toys off beds.<\/li>\n<li>Cover mattresses and pillows in dust-proof (allergen-impermeable) zippered covers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Pets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Your pet\u2019s skin flakes, urine, and saliva can be asthma triggers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider keeping pets outdoors or even finding a new home for your pets, if necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Keep pets out of the bedroom and other sleeping areas at all times, and keep the door closed.<\/li>\n<li>Keep pets away from fabric-covered furniture, carpets, and stuffed toys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Molds<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Molds grow on damp materials. The key to mold control is moisture control.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If mold is a problem in your home, clean up the mold and get rid of excess water or moisture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lowering the moisture also helps reduce other triggers, such as dust mites and cockroaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash mold off hard surfaces and dry completely. Absorbent materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, with mold may need to be replaced.<\/li>\n<li>Fix leaky plumbing or other sources of water.<\/li>\n<li>Keep drip pans in your air conditioner, refrigerator, and dehumidifier clean and dry.<\/li>\n<li>Use exhaust fans or open windows in kitchens and bathrooms when showering, cooking, or using the dishwasher.<\/li>\n<li>Vent clothes dryers to the outside.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain low indoor humidity, ideally between 30-50% relative humidity. Humidity levels can be measured by hygrometers which are available at local hardware stores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Pests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Droppings or body parts of pests such as cockroaches or rodents can be asthma triggers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not leave food or garbage out.<\/li>\n<li>Store food in airtight containers.<\/li>\n<li>Clean all food crumbs or spilled liquids right away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Try using poison baits, boric acid (for cockroaches), or traps first before using pesticidal sprays.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0If sprays are used:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Limit the spray to infested area.<\/li>\n<li>Carefully follow instructions on the label.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure there is plenty of fresh air when you spray, and keep the person with asthma out of the room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also&#8230; House dust may contain asthma triggers. Remove dust often with a damp cloth, and vacuum carpet and fabric-covered furniture to reduce dust build-up. Allergic people should leave the area being vacuumed.
