However, they\u2019re not perfect. They can still run into problems that are unique to them, and it can be frustrating for customers who picture them working perfectly. Issues With the Reversing Valve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first and most common issue that\u2019s unique to heat pumps is one that has to do with the reversing valve<\/strong>. This valve is basically the component that separates a heat pump from an air conditioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember\u2013heat pumps can switch from cooling to heating mode and function in reverse, unlike a central air conditioner that can only cool the air in your home. A heat pump is both a heating and cooling system while an AC is just a cooling unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, the reversing valve is an integral component and is required for this switch. If your heat pump is having trouble switching from cooling to heating mode or vice versa, then there could be a problem with the valve that needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ice, Mildew, and Moisture Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heat pumps go through a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, both during the winter and the summer. In summer, humidity is removed from the air automatically through the cooling process and dispersed through a condensate drain. During the winter, if you\u2019ve got a humidifier running or a pot of boiling water on the stove, that humidity might go through your heat pump and must exit similarly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the condensate drain gets clogged, leaks, or has a problem, it can lead to all sorts of issues from mildew growth to foul odors. And, if the system\u2019s air filter clogs up, you can have ice form from the residual humidity that gets cooled too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incorrect Thermostat Calibration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thermostats are required to adequately control your heat pump. Any issues with temperature regulation, problems with meeting temperature demand, or simply just poor control can all mean there\u2019s something wrong with the thermostat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fan Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your heat pump is a forced-air heating and cooling system<\/strong>, which means it requires a fan to push the treated air throughout your home. If no airflow is coming from the vents, or if you don\u2019t hear the whir of a fan in your heat pump, then something might be seriously wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
