How We Conduct a Home Energy Efficiency Assessment

Perform an Infiltrometer Test

The blower door is a very powerful diagnostic tool designed to measure the airtightness of buildings (homes) and to help locate air leakage pathways.

Building airtightness measurements are used for a variety of purposes, including:

Documenting the construction airtightness of buildings.
Estimating natural infiltration rates of houses.
Measuring and documenting the effectiveness of air sealing activities.
Measuring duct leakage in forced air distribution systems.

Thermographic Imaging – IR Cameras

Using thermographic imaging, we can see right through your walls to locate trouble areas. Infrared Thermography is the latest, most sophisticated analytical tool in the energy auditor’s toolkit. However, the tool is only as good as the operator, and at Barron Home Services, we use the latest state-of-the-art Fluke Thermal I.R. Cameras. Thermal cameras are a powerful tool for viewing wall cavity insulation, ceiling insulation, and moisture-related issues. Used in conjunction with the Blower Door, this tool is very effective at locating voids in the home's thermal boundary.

Duct Leakage and Repair

Air leakage in forced air duct systems is now recognized as a major source of energy waste in both new and existing houses and commercial buildings. Why is duct leakage important? Studies indicate that duct leakage can account for as much as 25% of total house energy loss and, in many cases, has a greater impact on energy use than air infiltration through the building shell. In many light commercial buildings, duct leakage is often the single largest cause of performance and comfort problems.

Indoor Humidity and Moisture Control

Moisture can lead to mold, and mold can affect your health. Moisture Analysis is a very important step and is often overlooked in the energy analysis. Moisture issues often cause more problems for homeowners because they are generally hidden, or the homeowner does not realize how serious the situation really is. Over time, moisture can lead to health and building durability issues.

Combustion Gas Analysis

Analyzing flue gas at the hot water heater and other fossil fuel appliances. Combustion Analysis and combustion safety are one of the main focal points in the energy audit. Many homeowners are unaware that they have problems with their combustion equipment (e.g., furnaces, water heaters, clothes dryers, and gas stoves). These items have not been serviced regularly and require makeup air to operate efficiently and safely.

Utility Bill Analysis

Analyzing 12-24 months of utility bills is a powerful way of determining where you are spending money on power to operate your home. The home is a very complicated system, and without knowing where your utility dollars are going, it’s impossible to know what will give you the best return on investment. Barron Home Services can help by creating a baseline utility cost to compare energy-saving investments.

Weatherization Services

Weatherization is the final piece of your energy audit. The energy audit creates a map of your home, enabling weatherization work to be done in the most cost-effective manner. Once the energy analysis report is compiled, the homeowner will receive a comprehensive report outlining the most cost-effective path for the weatherization work. The report will include all of the information from the energy audit analysis, along with a list of weatherization and energy retrofits.
