Spring Cleaning Isn’t Just for Closets — Your AC Needs It Too

Home | Blog | Published on April 6th, 2026

When most homeowners think about spring cleaning, they picture decluttering closets, washing windows, and deep-cleaning kitchens. But there’s one essential system that often gets overlooked: your air conditioner. After sitting idle through the colder months in Bellingham, your AC needs a little attention before it’s ready to keep your home cool and comfortable again.

The good news is that there are several simple maintenance steps you can handle yourself to improve efficiency and extend the life of your system.

Let’s Get to Work!

Start with the basics: replace or clean your air filter. This is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work harder and increasing energy costs. Most filters should be replaced every 1–3 months, especially if you have pets or allergies.

Next, head outside to inspect your condenser unit. Over the fall and winter, leaves, dirt, and debris can build up around it. Clear away anything within at least two feet of the unit to ensure proper airflow. You can also gently rinse the exterior coils with a garden hose (just make sure the power is turned off first). This helps remove dirt that can reduce efficiency.

Inside your home, check your air vents and registers. Make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, rugs, or dust buildup. Vacuuming these areas can improve airflow and indoor air quality.

What About the More Sensitive Components?

While these DIY steps go a long way, it’s important to recognize that your AC system has more delicate internal components that require professional care. Parts like the evaporator coil, refrigerant lines, electrical connections, and motor systems are not only complex but can also be hazardous to handle without proper training.

That’s where professional maintenance comes in.

Scheduling a spring tune-up with a licensed HVAC technician ensures your system is thoroughly inspected and optimized. A professional will check refrigerant levels, test system performance, clean internal components, and identify small issues before they turn into costly repairs. They can also ensure your system is running safely and efficiently, which can significantly reduce energy bills over the summer.

Think of it this way: your DIY efforts handle the visible, surface-level cleaning, while a professional service addresses the hidden, technical side of your system.

Combine Good Practices and Professional Maintenance

By combining both approaches, you’re giving your air conditioner the full “spring cleaning” it deserves.

As temperatures start to rise, a clean and well-maintained AC system means fewer breakdowns, better air quality, and a more comfortable home. So this spring, don’t stop at your closets—make sure your cooling system is ready for the season ahead.
