3 Signs it’s Time for Furnace Replacement

Year after year, you rely on your furnace to kick on during that first frigid day in winter, and like clockwork, it always does. You upkeep it with maintenance, you don’t linger on repairs, but all good things come to an end. If it’s giving you one of these three major troubles, it’s time to consider furnace replacement.

1. Heating Cycles Keep Getting Longer

When your furnace fires up, the heating cycle time varies based on how cold it is in your home, and the temperature difference it needs to make up for. If you don’t touch your thermostat and leave it at the same setting nearly all the time, but heating cycles are getting longer on average, that’s a big sign that it’s time to consider replacement. As time goes on, your furnace’s efficiency steadily declines, and this is how it starts to play out.

2. Your Energy Bills Are Going Up

We all want lower heating bills, but when it rolls in at the end of the month, you notice it’s steadily rising. While this could be due to a wide array of factors, systems in your home that use the most energy are usually to blame.

While turning down your thermostat can surely help, if the issue is coming from inside of your furnace, that will only bandage the problem, not fix it. Your furnace loses efficiency over time, so if your furnace is on the older side, it’s a symptom of its years of service.

3. Your Furnace is Nearing 15 Years of Service

When your furnace was installed, you kept up on maintenance and repairs, and it lasted for a long time as a result. Even when you do everything right, around 15 years of service is when furnaces generally tend to give out.

Those who don’t maintain their furnace barely even make it to the earliest end of the scale for a furnace’s average lifespan, which is around a decade. You’ve gotten everything out of your furnace that it can give, but eventually, wear and tear takes its hold and your system’s age starts to show–it’s time to replace it.
